How Do You Celebrate World Down Syndrome Day?

Every day is a great day to celebrate Down syndrome. However, just because we may not always remember to, March 21 is considered World Down Syndrome Day, which has been officially observed by the United Nations since 2012.

Consider this your guide to how you can celebrate WDSD in the Greater St. Louis metro area, as well as across the world.

Rock the Socks!

The first thing you can do is rock some odd socks on March 21. Chromosomes are shaped like socks, and since those with Down syndrome carry an extra chromosome, mismatched socks are a great symbol for the day.

If you’re on social media, the hashtag #LotsofSocks has been used in the past to signify the usage of such socks, so be on the lookout for that.

If you want to get serious about your sock choice, you can check out the World Down Syndrome Day organization shop and buy a pair or two. All proceeds go back into the UK organization’s efforts.

Racing for 3.21

Set up by the National Down Syndrome Society, Racing for 3.21 is a virtual race event which “allows participants and advocates to run, walk, bike, hike, swim and/or move for 3.21 miles at any time, any place and at any pace on March 21, 2020.”

Sign up here to participate at any time of your choosing on this special day.

Celebrate with us!

Join the Down Syndrome Association of Greater St. Louis from 2:00-4:30 pm at Old Hickory Golf Club in St. Peters for a fun-filled day. Music, dancing, karaoke, games, snacks, beverages and much more will highlight the celebration, and a raffle for some great prizes will also be included. This event is recommended for individuals 16 years and older.

Rock 21 Concert at Tin Roof in Downtown St. Louis

Although it’s a few days later, be sure to join us on March 28 from 12-3 pm for the Rock 21 Concert at Tin Roof.

DSAGSL and Mozingo Music teamed up to create the Rock 21 Program where participants ages 10+ joined together to make their very own band. The bands have been practicing together and are ready to showcase their talents!

This event also includes raffles, tee shirts, food and drinks.

Local Community Group Events

Plenty of community groups celebrate all month with us, so don’t miss out on these exciting events!

  • Heartland DSA Community Group Family-Friendly Brunch – March 21
  • Southern Illinois Community Group Bowling Event – March 21
  • St. Charles Community Group Family Event – March 14

Shop with Local Businesses

Of course, some local shops and restaurants are doing their part. Here’s some places you’ll definitely want to stop into on or around March 21!

  • The Diamond Family is donating 10% of sales on March 21 and are having guest jewelers help at the store.
  • The St. Louis Closet Co. is donating a portion of proceeds throughout the month of March to the DSAGSL.
  • All Penn Station locations are giving customers the option of  “Rounding Up” their change to donate to DSAGSL and if you donate $2 or more, you get a coupon for a free sandwich on your next visit.

Raise Awareness in Any Way

Of course, the best way to celebrate is to raise awareness year-round! Check out our handy reference guide below on how to do this. From sharing your personal stories to participating in Step Up for Down Syndrome on June 7, there’s always something we can do to educate the world about Down syndrome!
